The responsibility to ensure that future generations have a habitable planet lies with each and every one of us. According to the 1987 Brundtland Report “Our Common Future” of the World Commission on Environment and Development, the concept of sustainable development can be defined as: “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to mee t their own needs” [1] This definition emphasizes the importance of finding a balance between the current needs of society and the preservation of natural resources, in order to ensure that future generations can also meet their own needs.
